The best OBD2 app for Android depends on the job in front of you. A driver who only wants the check-engine light explained is shopping for a different product than someone who already owns an ELM327 and wants live data, module fault codes, or coding. This comparison covers five of those apps: OBD Master Pro, Car Scanner ELM OBD2, OBDocker, OBDeleven, and Carista.
Store ratings and prices below were taken from Google Play, the Apple App Store, and the publishers’ own plan pages on 1 October 2026. They move by country and by week. Treat them as a snapshot, then confirm the purchase sheet on your own phone before you pay.
One split matters more than the star rating. OBD Master Pro, Car Scanner, and OBDocker talk to a generic ELM327 or ELM329 adapter. OBDeleven expects its own dongle. Carista does its full job on Carista’s own scanners and on a short list of named adapters. A cheap clone is a poor match for any of them. Many ELM327 v1.5 copies manage engine OBD-II and then fail with a buffer error as soon as the app asks a second module to speak.
| App | Best for | Phones | Adapter | Coding |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| OBD Master Pro | Multi-brand diagnostics and coding on your own ELM327 | Android | ELM327 / ELM329: Bluetooth Classic, BLE, Wi-Fi, USB | Premium. VAG, BMW, Toyota, Ford, Hyundai/Kia, Renault, FCA, Nissan, Mercedes routing |
| Car Scanner ELM OBD2 | Widest free scanner on Android and iPhone | Android and iOS | ELM327. iOS is Wi-Fi or BLE only | VAG MQB, PQ26, MLB-EVO, plus some Toyota, Renault, Hyundai/Kia service work |
| OBDocker | Full-system scan and one-click changes on ELM327 | Android and iPhone | ELM327 / ELM329. USB not supported | Paid. One-click adjustments on a long brand list |
| OBDeleven | VW Group coding with a licensed dongle | Android and iOS | OBDeleven 3. ELM327 is basic OBD-II only | VAG manual coding on PRO. One-Click Apps on ULTIMATE or credits |
| Carista | Menu customizations and service resets | Android and iOS | Carista EVO, selected named adapters. Generic ELM is limited and Android-only | Pro. Customizations, not open VAG long coding |
Which Android OBD2 App Fits the Job
If you already have a decent ELM327 and you want brand diagnostics plus coding without buying a locked dongle, start with OBD Master Pro. The connection catalog is the widest in this list: 1,304 connection profiles under 177 brand names, plus a generic OBD-II profile. Coding is a separate, smaller catalog, and it is Premium. A profile existing for a brand does not mean that car has long coding.
Choose Car Scanner ELM OBD2 when you want one app on both Android and iPhone, and you want the largest free surface. Choose OBDocker when you want advertised one-click modifications on a generic adapter and you accept a subscription after the trial. Choose OBDeleven when the car is Volkswagen Group and you are willing to buy their device and a plan. Choose Carista for guided customizations on a yearly plan.
None of these apps is a dealer diagnostic system, and none of them is a firmware workstation. Reading a control unit over the CAN bus, walking UDS SecurityAccess, or pulling a calibration is a different class of work from polling Mode 01 PIDs. Phone apps stop where the ECU’s diagnostic session stops.

OBD Master Pro: Coding and Diagnostics on a Normal ELM327
OBD Master Pro is an Android app, package com.obdmaster.pro, published on Google Play by CAR SCANNER ELM. The US listing on 1 October 2026 showed a 4.9 score, and an update dated 30 August 2026. The interesting part is the feature surface, not the star count.
The phone connects over Bluetooth Classic, Bluetooth Low Energy, Wi-Fi, or USB OTG. Classic and BLE are different radios. A LELink-style dongle is BLE and does not pair the old way. A lot of generic ELM327 sticks are Classic only. The app has separate Bluetooth and BLE tabs, which is the detail that saves an hour of “adapter not found” on Android 12 and newer. The in-app adapter list names Vgate iCar Pro 2S (BLE), vLinker MC+ and vLinker MS, Veepeak OBDCheck BLE+, and LELink. Any genuine ELM327-class adapter can be used. The list is the tested set.
Protocol coverage matches what older cars and trucks actually speak: automatic selection, SAE J1850 PWM and VPW, ISO 9141-2, ISO 14230 KWP slow and fast init, ISO 15765 CAN at 11-bit and 29-bit, both 250 and 500 kbit/s, and SAE J1939. You pick a make and a connection profile, then the adapter.
Diagnostics cover stored codes (Mode 03) and pending codes (Mode 07), plus extra per-ECU reads where the profile uses UDS or KWP commands. On a Volkswagen CAN profile the module list can include engine, ABS, airbag, gateway, cluster, and other units that answer. The scan shows the module name, whether it answered, and the codes with descriptions. There is an offline DTC search, so a code can be looked up with the adapter unplugged. The free tier allows 3 DTC scans per 24 hours. Clearing codes, the manufacturer DTC view, and the DTC Wizard are Premium.
Live data is standard OBD-II PIDs plus brand PIDs when that profile ships them. The free dashboard shows gauges, with a cap of 5 PIDs at once. Premium raises that cap to 999 and adds charts, dashboard editing, a heads-up display, car mode, an O2 screen, a data logger, record and playback, custom PIDs, voice commands, freeze frame, Mode 06, and the emissions readiness check. A health score from 0 to 100 is built from fault codes and a few key PIDs (coolant, voltage, load, fuel trim, oxygen sensors), with score history and a parasitic-drain sample. Threshold alerts and fuel-rate calibration are Premium.
Catalogs in the app cover VAG (Volkswagen, Audi, Skoda, Seat, Cupra, and related makes), Hyundai and Kia, Renault, FCA / Stellantis, BMW F, G, and I from 2011, BMW E-series, Nissan and Infiniti, Ford and Lincoln, Toyota, Lexus, and Scion, plus Mercedes-Benz and Smart routing. On VAG the platform files include MQB (Golf 7 and 8, Polo, T-Cross, T-Roc, Tiguan 2, Octavia 3, Leon 3, and similar), PQ26, MLB-EVO, Touareg NF, Tiguan I facelift, Yeti, and an “other” path for PQ35 adaptations and long coding. The coding screens include long coding, adaptations, service and inspection resets where the catalog has them, a custom coding editor, and backup and restore. FCA also has active tests and a UDS command library on Premium.
That is a broader coding brand list than Car Scanner publishes, and it does not require OBDeleven’s dongle. It is still not a promise that every module on every car will code. VW up!, Citigo, and Mii have no dedicated MQB hidden-feature list. Extra modules such as ABS and airbag need an adapter that can keep a long session open. The app also includes performance timers (0-60, 0-100, and 0-150 km/h, 60-100 km/h, and the quarter mile), a garage, trip logs, and maintenance reminders. Free keeps one vehicle and seven days of trip history. Weekly and Monthly plans keep five vehicles. Lifetime removes the vehicle cap. Report export is Premium. The interface is translated into a long list of languages, including English, German, and Turkish.

Plans inside the app are Free, Weekly, Monthly, and Lifetime. The Play listing shows in-app purchases and does not print one public price in the description, so the amount is whatever the purchase sheet shows in your country.
Car Scanner ELM OBD2
Car Scanner, from CAR SCANNER LLC on Android (com.ovz.carscanner) and from the same project on iOS, is the app most “best OBD2 app” articles are actually describing. The US Play listing showed about 4.7 stars, with an update dated 20 July 2026. The US App Store listing showed about 4.8.
It is a generic ELM327 app. Android talks Bluetooth, BLE, Wi-Fi, and, as of the July 2026 notes, USB. iPhone and iPad are Wi-Fi or BLE only, because iOS does not expose classic Bluetooth to this kind of app. There is no own dongle. The store text points people at OBDLink, Kiwi 3, Vgate, Carista, LELink, and Veepeak.
The Android listing says the widest feature set is available for free and that the app contains ads. The iOS listing says a one-time purchase or a subscription unlocks everything. On the US App Store the in-app prices included a forever Pro at $7.99, six months at $3.99, and one year at $4.99. Android prices were not printed on the US Play page. A Pro license does not transfer between Play, the App Store, and Huawei AppGallery.
Live data, custom dashboards, charts, custom PIDs, HUD, freeze frame, Mode 06, readiness, a trip computer, and acceleration tests are all on the store listings. Brand profiles cover a long list that includes Toyota, GM, Nissan, Renault, Hyundai, Kia, Mazda, Ford, and the VW Group. Coding on the publisher’s site includes VAG MQB, MLB-EVO, and PQ26, some Hyundai and Kia CAN service functions, Renault and Dacia where the model is supported, and Toyota CAN coding in a limited year range. The iOS store text is narrower and talks about VAG MQB and PQ26. Older VAG platforms are listed as not supported yet. A blanket scan of every ABS and airbag unit on every car is not an official claim.
Car Scanner is the right first install if you want one polished, actively updated app on both phone platforms and you can live with ads or a small Pro fee. It is the wrong benchmark if you need BMW, Ford, FCA, or Mercedes coding catalogs. Those are outside the coding list Car Scanner publishes.
OBDocker: One-Click Changes on an ELM327
OBDocker, from Motorsure Inc. (com.obdocker.obdocker), is the other large ELM327 app that advertises workshop-style functions. The US Play listing showed about 4.2 stars, and an update dated 28 August 2026. The US App Store listing showed about 4.0, and the public version history there stopped at 3.2.5 on 24 April 2025. Android is the copy that is still moving.
Adapters are generic ELM327 and ELM329. The publisher recommends Vgate, Veepeak, OBDLink, vLinker, and Carista EVO, among others. Classic Bluetooth is Android-only. The official adapter guide says USB is not supported. iPhone is BLE or Wi-Fi.
The store offers a 7-day trial of full features, then Pro or Pro Max. A developer reply on the Play page in January 2026 described Pro as OBD-II diagnostics and Pro Max as diagnostics plus advanced functions and modifications. The English listing does not publish a feature matrix that matches those two names. US App Store prices included Pro at $2.99 a month or $17.99 a year, and Pro Max at $7.99 a month, $47.99 a year, or $119.99 as a permanent purchase. Play did not print dollar amounts.
Standard mode is ordinary OBD-II. Advanced mode on the current store text names Toyota, Lexus, Nissan, Infiniti, Honda, Acura, Hyundai, Kia, VW, Audi, Skoda, SEAT, Mercedes-Benz, BMW, Mini, Porsche, Ford, Lincoln, Chevrolet, Cadillac, GMC, and Buick. Paid functions advertised include a full-system scan (transmission, ABS, airbag, body, and similar modules), service resets, and one-click adjustments. Charts, a HUD, and custom PIDs are not stated on the pages reviewed, so they should not be assumed.
OBDocker is the closest product to OBD Master Pro: both sit on a generic adapter, both go past the engine ECU, and both sell coding behind a paid plan. OBDocker has an iPhone app and a permanent Pro Max option at a published US price. OBD Master Pro documents USB, a deeper published VAG platform list (MQB through PQ35 long coding, BMW E and F/G/I, FCA active tests), custom PIDs, HUD, and logging. If those screens matter, Master Pro is the more explicit tool. If you want a trial of one-click mods and you also carry an iPhone, OBDocker is the one to test for a week before you subscribe.
OBDeleven: The VW Group Dongle
OBDeleven, from OBDeleven UAB, is a different category. Current hardware is the OBDeleven 3 Bluetooth dongle. NextGen still runs most functions but does not cover Ford or Mercedes-Benz, and new work targets the 3. The plans page says the plans expect an OBDeleven device. The Play listing also says a generic ELM327 does basic OBD-II only. The main Android app (com.voltasit.obdeleven.basic) showed about 4.0 to 4.1 stars, updated 24 September 2026.
The free plan includes advanced fault reading and clearing on supported brands, live data, charts, and gauges. One-Click Apps need credits on the free and PRO plans. Manual coding, adaptations, long coding, basic settings, and SFD unlock for VAG sit on PRO. ULTIMATE adds One-Click Apps under a fair-use rule. On the publisher’s site, PRO was €59.99 for 12 months and ULTIMATE was €189.99 for 12 months. The US App Store showed PRO at $69.99 and ULTIMATE at $239.99. Credits are sold separately. The company states that an internet connection is required for a session.
Manual coding is Volkswagen Group. One-Click Apps also extend to BMW and MINI, Toyota and Lexus, Ford in the US, and Mercedes-Benz, with region limits, and Ford and Mercedes need the OBDeleven 3. Other brands stay on ordinary OBD-II, often engine and transmission codes on CAN cars from about 2008. A support reply has said SFD2 on 2024 and newer Volkswagen models cannot be bypassed.
Buy OBDeleven when you want that licensed One-Click catalog and you will own their dongle. Skip it when you already own a good ELM327 and you do not want a second adapter plus a yearly plan. That is the gap OBD Master Pro and, on a narrower coding list, Car Scanner are built to fill. Neither of those ELM apps replaces OBDeleven on a 2024 SFD2 car.
Carista: Customizations, Not Open Long Coding
Carista, from Prizmos Ltd. (com.prizmos.carista), showed about 3.9 to 4.0 stars on the US Play listing, updated 21 August 2026. The US App Store showed about 4.6. Pro is $19.99 a month or $59.99 a year on the Play listing, the US App Store, and the publisher FAQ.
The free app does standard OBD-II read and clear, basic live data, readiness, ECU information, and an acceleration test. Customizations, multi-module diagnostics, and service tools (oil, battery registration, EPB, DPF, throttle, TPMS) need Pro. Applied changes stay in the car after the subscription ends. Hardware is the Carista EVO or the older white reader, plus named third-party units such as OBDLink CX, MX+, and specific vLinker models. A generic ELM327 v1.4 is Android-only and misses pieces the EVO has, including some Ford, Mazda, Volvo, and newer VW Group protection support that Carista documents for the EVO.
The coding model is a menu of customizations: lights, locks, cluster themes, throttle response, and similar items, with coverage that depends on the car. Carista’s own comparison marks manual VAG long coding as absent. That is the clean way to separate it from OBD Master Pro and from OBDeleven PRO. Carista is comfortable and guided. It is not the app you open when you need to edit a long coding string or an adaptation channel by hand.
Adapter quality decides whether the brand features appear. Prefer a named BLE or dual-mode unit (Vgate iCar Pro, vLinker, Veepeak, OBDLink, LELink) over an unbranded v1.5 stick. Match the radio to the phone: iPhones in this list need BLE or Wi-Fi, Android can use Classic as well. If a second module drops the session, replace the adapter before you blame the app.
FAQ
What is the best OBD2 app for Android?
For a generic ELM327 and for coding as well as diagnostics, OBD Master Pro is the strongest match in this list. For a free app that also runs on iPhone, Car Scanner ELM OBD2 is the default. For VW Group cars where you want licensed one-click apps, OBDeleven with its own dongle is the better default.
Which app is best for an ELM327?
Car Scanner, OBD Master Pro, and OBDocker all use ELM327-class adapters. OBD Master Pro and OBDocker are the ones that add multi-brand service and coding on that same adapter. OBDeleven is the wrong app to pair with a generic ELM327. Carista accepts one only in a reduced Android mode.
Can an ELM327 app code a Volkswagen?
On supported platforms, yes. OBD Master Pro includes VAG catalogs for MQB, PQ26, MLB-EVO, and an “other” path that covers PQ35 adaptations and long coding, behind Premium, and it needs a capable adapter. Car Scanner publishes MQB, PQ26, and MLB-EVO coding. OBDeleven does VAG coding on its own device with PRO or ULTIMATE. None of these is a documented bypass for SFD2 on the newest Volkswagen models.
Do I need a subscription?
Carista, OBDocker, and OBDeleven are built around a recurring plan, and OBDeleven also requires its own dongle. Some of them have a permanent option: OBDocker Pro Max, Carista changes that remain after you cancel, and OBDeleven credits. Car Scanner Pro on iOS can be a one-time purchase. OBD Master Pro sells Weekly, Monthly, and Lifetime inside the app, so you can pay once for Lifetime or pay for a shorter plan. Check the current price in your Play Store.
